Match your fridge in three steps

Pick your brand, pick the closest series, type your model number. The finder matches against our live database and returns the correct cartridge, plus a one-tap handoff to a quote.

  • 1 Pick your brand: Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, Bosch, Smeg, Hisense or Defy
  • 2 Pick your fridge series (for example RS side-by-side or GSL French door)
  • 3 Type your model number, see the exact filter plus the quote button

Typical match in under 60 seconds

Most fridge owners find out the filter needs changing when the light turns red. Then the questions start. Which cartridge fits mine? Is a compatible filter safe? Can I install it myself or should a plumber do it? This page answers those questions for every brand we cover, and hands you off to a finder that matches your exact model to the correct part in under a minute.

The three types of fridge water filter

Every residential fridge filter sold in South Africa falls into one of three physical formats. The right one is decided by your fridge model, not preference. Knowing which format you need narrows the finder match to a handful of cartridges.

Internal twist-in

The cylinder slots into a ceiling housing inside the main fridge compartment. Give it a quarter turn and it seats. The most common format in South African side-by-side fridges.

Common examples

Samsung HAF-CIN, Samsung HAFCU1, LG LT700P, LG LT500P

Fit time

Around three minutes, no tools

Internal push-fit (door)

A shorter cylinder sits inside the left or right door of a French Door fridge. Push it in, clip it, done. Dispensing pauses briefly while the door is open.

Common examples

Samsung HAF-QIN (DA97-17376B), LG LT1000P, Bosch UltraClarity

Fit time

Around two minutes, no tools

External inline

A slim cartridge sits behind or under the fridge on the quarter-inch cold water feed. Used on fridges without an internal filter slot, or as a pre-filter before the internal cartridge.

Common examples

Samsung DA29-10105J, LG 5231JA2012A, universal quarter-inch inline

Fit time

First install 45 to 60 minutes (needs a John Guest tee on the supply)

Fridge brands we cover

Samsung and LG make up the bulk of South African fridge filter enquiries. Whirlpool, Bosch, Smeg, Hisense and Defy all appear regularly. For each brand, we stock or source the correct cartridge, match it to your model number, and install in Gauteng or courier nationally.

Whirlpool

Covered
4396508EDR1RXD1EDR3RXD1

Whirlpool uses EveryDrop cartridges in modern American-style fridges. We source EDR1, EDR3 and the older 4396508 series, plus a quarter-inch inline fallback for the smaller Whirlpool units that do not have an internal slot.

Bosch

Covered
REPLFLTR10UltraClarity9000 077104

Bosch uses the UltraClarity push-fit cartridge in modern side-by-side and French Door fridges. Older Bosch units use an external inline filter. Both are identified from the model number, which starts with KAN, KAD or KFN on South African market units.

Smeg

External inline
Quarter-inch inlineUniversal 2.5" housing

Smeg residential fridges in South Africa do not carry an internal filter slot, so they run on an external inline cartridge fitted on the water line. We fit the inline at the back of the fridge with a John Guest tee on the cold water feed. One cartridge type covers most Smeg installations.

Hisense & Defy

External inline
Quarter-inch inlineGeneric compatible

Most Hisense and Defy fridges sold in South Africa either do not have an internal filter slot, or use a universal external inline cartridge. We fit the inline on the quarter-inch feed line, flush, and brief the owner on replacement intervals. Send the model code and we confirm the exact part.

How to read your fridge model number

The filter is decided by the fridge model, not the year. Every brand prints a short model code on a sticker inside the fridge. Here is where to look and what each code format tells us.

1

Open the fridge, look left

Open the main compartment. Look on the left interior wall, near the ceiling, above the top shelf. Samsung prints a rectangular silver sticker with the full model number, serial number and manufacture date. LG, Bosch, Whirlpool and Smeg all follow the same convention.

Tip: if the sticker is missing or faded, check the back of the fridge near the compressor housing.
2

Read the first letters

The first two to four characters tell us the series. Samsung side-by-sides start with RS, French Doors start with RF. LG side-by-sides start with GSL or GSI, French Doors start with GBB or GML, American-style with LFX or LMX. Bosch starts with KAN or KAD. Smeg with FAB or FQ.

Example: RS68N8320S9 → RS series modern side-by-side → HAF-CIN cartridge.
3

Send us the first six characters

If you are not sure which prefix you have, type the first six characters of the full model number into the finder. It matches against the database and returns the correct cartridge plus a quote button. If the finder cannot match, the WhatsApp fallback accepts a photo of the sticker and we identify it for you during business hours.

The full sticker usually has more detail than needed. Six characters almost always narrow it down.

What a fridge filter actually removes

Every residential fridge cartridge runs a three-stage sequence inside the housing. Water enters the inlet, passes through a sediment wrap that catches rust, grit and pipe particles, then moves through an activated carbon core that reduces chlorine taste, chlorine odour and most volatile organic compounds. Cleaner water leaves the outlet and feeds both the door dispenser and the ice maker.

Better cartridges (NSF-42 and NSF-53 certified) also reduce health-related contaminants like lead, cysts and some pharmaceutical traces. We only stock compatibles that independently carry the NSF certification on the part number.

  • Chlorine and chlorine odour reduction from the activated carbon core
  • Sediment, rust and fine particles caught by the outer wrap
  • Cysts, lead and mercury reduction on NSF-53 certified cartridges
  • VOCs and pharmaceutical traces on the higher-spec carbon blocks
  • A cartridge does not soften hard water and does not add minerals. For that, a whole-house softener or reverse osmosis is the right tool.

What the filter indicator light is telling you

Most modern fridges track filter life on a timer, not a flow meter. Every six months the indicator cycles through a three-stage sequence. Brands vary on the exact colours and symbols, but the logic is the same.

Fresh

Blue, green or off

First five to six months after a replacement. Samsung shows blue, LG keeps the light off, Whirlpool shows green. No action needed. Dispenser and ice maker flow at the full rated rate, taste and odour stay neutral.

Warning

Amber, purple or solid red

Approaching the six month mark. The cartridge still works, but order the replacement now so you are not dispensing through a depleted carbon core for weeks. This is the signal to open the finder or WhatsApp your model number.

Replace

Red, flashing red, or "Replace Filter"

The filter has passed its rated life. Carbon is exhausted, sediment slips past the wrap, flow slows on some models. Replace the cartridge, flush ten to fifteen litres, then reset the indicator using the control panel sequence for your model.

Why the first install is always the longest

A cartridge swap is a 20 to 30 minute job. You shut the supply, pull the old cartridge, seat the new one, flush ten to fifteen litres through the dispenser, reset the indicator, and check flow at both the dispenser paddle and the ice maker.

A first time install on a fridge that has never had a filter before is longer. We pull the fridge out, tap a John Guest tee or saddle valve into the quarter-inch cold water feed, fit the inline in the correct flow direction, seal, pressure test for leaks, then run the flush. First time installs run 45 minutes to an hour.

Getting the tap-in wrong leaks behind the fridge and damages cabinetry fast. This is the single biggest reason homeowners book us for the first install and handle subsequent swaps themselves.

  • Cartridge swap: 20 to 30 minutes, no plumbing work
  • First time inline install: 45 to 60 minutes, includes a water-line tap-in
  • Indicator reset: sequence varies by model, we reset every install
  • Flush volume: 10 to 15 litres to clear carbon dust from a new cartridge

Genuine OEM or certified compatible?

Both fit the housing, both carry independent certification, both deliver filtered water to your dispenser. The difference is the name on the box and the price. We quote both on every enquiry.

Genuine OEM

Branded by the fridge manufacturer

The cartridge is made or licensed by Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, Bosch or Smeg and carries the original part number on the label. Our default for fridges still under manufacturer warranty, or where the customer wants the name on the box.

  • Guaranteed compliance with the original spec sheet
  • Maintains the manufacturer warranty on the fridge
  • Rated lifespan per the brand printed on the box
  • Premium price point, genuine packaging, holographic sticker
Certified compatible

Reputable NSF-certified brand

Manufactured by established filter companies to match the OEM housing, flow rate, micron rating and NSF certification. We only stock compatibles with independent NSF-42 certification (often NSF-42 plus NSF-53) on the part number, not the cheapest option on the listing.

  • Same physical fit, same flow rate, same rated life
  • NSF-42 and often NSF-53 certified independently
  • Does not void the fridge warranty on most post-2020 models
  • 30 to 40 percent lower unit cost than OEM

Installed across the northern suburbs

We run fridge filter swaps and first-time installs across Sandton, Bryanston, Fourways, Hyde Park, Morningside, Rosebank, Randburg, Fairland, Northcliff, Linden and Parkhurst. Same-week bookings are the default, and same-day visits happen when the route has capacity.

The van carries Samsung HAF-CIN, HAF-QIN and HAFCU1 stock, the full LG LT range, plus universal quarter-inch inline cartridges for Smeg, Hisense and Defy. That means a single visit usually covers identification, supply and installation without a return trip.

For customers outside Gauteng, we courier the correct cartridge with a printed install guide after confirming the model. Most Samsung and LG internal cartridges are designed for DIY replacement and take two to three minutes once you know where the housing is.

  • Sandton, Bryanston, Fourways, Hyde Park, Morningside, Rosebank (typical response: same week)
  • Randburg, Fairland, Northcliff, Linden, Parkhurst (route density: high)
  • National courier: 2 to 4 business days via reputable couriers
  • No call-out fee for a quote, written figure before we come out

Why homeowners book us for fridge filters

Andy Plumbers has been in Fairland since the 1980s. Fridge filter work sits inside the broader water supply expertise that already runs through the practice, so identification and installation is genuinely plumbing work done by plumbers, not courier parcels.

Stock on the van

Samsung HAF-CIN, HAF-QIN, HAFCU1 and the full LG LT range stay on the van. Same-week fitting is the baseline.

Model matched, not guessed

The finder runs against a real installation database. No buying the wrong cartridge and finding out at the fridge.

Plumbers, not couriers

We catch the failing saddle valve, kinked inlet hose or collapsed couple that a DIY swap cannot see. Fix it once properly.

Fridge filter FAQ

The questions fridge owners ask most often when they contact us for a replacement. If yours is not covered, the WhatsApp link in the closing block goes straight to the office.

We cover Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, Bosch, Smeg, Hisense and Defy for fridge water filter supply and installation. Samsung and LG are the highest-volume brands in South African homes, and we have dedicated Samsung and LG brand hubs. The finder tool covers all seven brands, and for anything else we accept a photo of the model sticker via WhatsApp and source the correct cartridge.

Open the main fridge compartment and look on the left or right interior wall near the top, above the first shelf. Most brands print a rectangular label with the model number, serial number and manufacture date. On Samsung, the code starts with RS, RF, RB or SR. On LG, the code typically starts with GS, GR, GC or GB. If the label is faded or hidden, check the back of the unit or send us a photo via WhatsApp and we read it for you during business hours.

There are three physical formats. Internal twist-in cartridges sit in the top interior of side-by-side fridges and twist into a ceiling housing (Samsung HAF-CIN, HAFCU1, LG LT700P, LT500P). Internal push-fit cartridges sit inside a door on French Door models and push straight in (Samsung HAF-QIN, LG LT1000P, Bosch UltraClarity). External inline filters sit behind or under the fridge on the quarter-inch water line with push-fit fittings at both ends. The right format is decided by your fridge model, not preference.

Every six months is the standard guideline across Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, Bosch and most other brands. Most modern fridges track filter life on a timer (not a flow meter) and cycle an indicator light from blue to amber to red at the six month mark. In Joburg municipal water the cartridge typically reaches its rated flow of around 1 890 to 2 270 litres within that window. Replace sooner if water starts tasting off, dispenser flow slows, or ice starts carrying a funny smell.

We supply both. Genuine OEM cartridges are branded by the fridge manufacturer and carry the original part number. Compatible cartridges are made by reputable filter companies to match the housing, flow rate, micron rating and NSF certification. We only stock compatibles with independent NSF-42 certification (often NSF-42 plus NSF-53) on the part number, not the cheapest option on the listing. Both options appear in every quote, and you choose based on warranty and budget.

Most internal twist-in and push-fit cartridges are designed for homeowner replacement. Twist-ins take about three minutes, push-fits take about two, both without tools. We supply with a printed instruction sheet for DIY customers. For external inline filters on a fridge without an internal slot, for first time installs where a saddle valve or John Guest tee needs fitting on the water line, or for any fridge with an existing weeping connector, we recommend the installation visit. Leaks behind a fridge damage cabinetry fast and the repair cost is high.

For an internal cartridge swap: shut the supply tap, twist or push the old cartridge out, seat the new one, open the supply, flush ten to fifteen litres through the dispenser until the water runs clear (removes carbon dust), then reset the filter indicator light. For first time inline installs: pull the fridge out, tap a John Guest tee or saddle valve into the quarter-inch cold water feed, fit the inline filter in the correct flow direction, seal and pressure test, then flush. Total visit time is 20 to 30 minutes for a swap, 45 minutes to an hour for a first time inline.

We supply and fit across Sandton, Bryanston, Fourways, Hyde Park, Morningside, Rosebank, Randburg, Fairland, Northcliff, Linden and Parkhurst, plus the surrounding northern Johannesburg suburbs. Same-week bookings are the default and same-day visits happen when our route has capacity. For national customers outside Gauteng, we courier the correct cartridge with a printed install guide after confirming the model number.

The figure depends on your fridge brand and model, whether you choose a genuine OEM or a certified compatible cartridge, and whether it is a simple cartridge swap or a first time inline install. Open the finder, match your model, then hit Get a Quote and we come back with a straight written figure for supply plus installation during business hours. No call-out fee for a quote and no surprise charges on the invoice.
