External Inline Fridge Filter (Quarter-inch)
The universal cartridge for any fridge with a water dispenser but no internal filter slot. Standard part numbers DA29-10105J, WSF-100 and EF-9603, all physically identical. NSF-42 certified, rated 6000 litres or 6 months, plumber-fitted on the feed line.
Most kitchens in South Africa have a fridge with a water dispenser but no internal filter housing. That's where the quarter-inch inline cartridge sits: cut in-line on the copper or plastic feed, filtering every litre before it reaches the fridge solenoid. It's the plumber-fitted option we install when the internal slot doesn't exist or isn't practical, and it's our standard answer for Hisense, Defy, most Bosch and most Smeg fridges.
Cartridge specification
The universal 1/4 inch inline cartridge reads as a single product in multiple part-number conventions. Verify the push-fit ports are quarter-inch, not three-eighths, before ordering.

Which fridges this cartridge fits
Any fridge with a water dispenser and no internal filter slot is a candidate. In South African kitchens that tends to cluster around six brand ranges.
H670SSH700SITRS694N4RQ-56WC4H800
Most Hisense models sold through Game, Makro and Hirsch's ship without internal filter housings and rely on an external inline cartridge.
DFF450DFF451F620DFF457
Defy's water-dispenser range uses a 1/4 inch external filter as standard. Locally produced so the feed line configuration is consistent.
SBS63XEDHFQ60XPESBS8004AO
European-import Smegs use an inline cartridge on the feed side. No internal filter housing on any current Smeg water-dispenser model in SA.
KAI90KAD90KAN92
Bosch's European-spec side-by-sides (non-American UltraClarity range) use inline cartridges. If the fridge is UltraClarity, the internal cartridge is the right one instead.
RS50N3513RS50N3913Older RS21
Samsung RS models where the internal housing was removed, damaged, or never fitted. Also used as a pre-filter for extra chlorine reduction.
GR-L207DTZGR-P207LSC27925
Older LG side-by-sides where the LT500P cartridge is discontinued or the internal housing was removed. Also used with any LG pre-2011 model.
Where the inline cartridge sits
The cartridge lives on the water feed line between the wall isolator and the fridge solenoid. Most South African kitchens have the feed entering through the floor or wall directly behind the fridge, which means the cartridge needs to be mounted accessibly so the six-month swap doesn't require pulling the fridge out each time.
Our standard install clips the cartridge body to the back of the cabinet with a pair of plastic saddle clips, leaving the push-fit ports pointing outward. The feed line is cut to length, deburred, then inserted firmly into each port. Quarter-inch push-fit rated to 120 psi holds the connection without clamps, but a slight tug-test after connection is standard before water-on.
- Cut line with a tube cutter, not a hacksaw, to avoid ovalising the bore
- Deburr both ends with a deburring tool or fine file so the O-ring seats cleanly
- Insert to stop inside the push-fit port, then pull back slightly to confirm the collet has gripped
- Orient arrow on the cartridge body matching the direction of water flow
How we install an inline fridge filter
Standard 20-minute visit. We bring the cartridge, push-fit tool, new fittings and a towel for the drip catch.
Pull fridge + isolate
Pull the fridge out far enough to access the feed line. Close the wall isolator or main supply, open the dispenser to relieve residual pressure.
Cut + deburr
Mark the cut point on the feed line to leave the cartridge accessible behind the fridge. Tube-cut cleanly, deburr both ends, dry thoroughly.
Fit cartridge + clip
Insert each end of the feed line into the quarter-inch push-fit ports in the direction of flow. Clip the cartridge body to the cabinet back.
Test + flush
Water on, hold the joint to check for leaks. Run three litres through the dispenser to flush carbon fines. Mark the install date on the cartridge.
Inline filter versus internal cartridge
When a fridge has both options, the internal cartridge is the better choice. The housing volume is larger, the carbon bed is denser, and NSF-53 (lead, cysts) and sometimes NSF-401 (pharmaceuticals) certifications are in reach. The inline cartridge is NSF-42 only, which is enough for chlorine taste and odour but not for the health-related contaminant list.
Where the inline cartridge wins is on fridges that don't offer an internal slot. Rather than running the dispenser through unfiltered water for the life of the fridge, the quarter-inch inline gives you a plumber-installed NSF-42 option on the feed side. It's also the correct pre-filter for boreholes or low-pressure municipal lines where sediment would otherwise reach the fridge solenoid.
- Inline advantage: works on any fridge regardless of brand or internal housing
- Internal advantage: higher certifications, longer life, smaller install footprint
- Combined: inline as a pre-filter + internal as the finishing stage is what we run on borehole homes
When inline is the right choice
Two stacks, one decision. If your fridge offers an internal cartridge, use that. If it doesn't, an inline is the correct plumber option.
Inline is the right answer
- Hisense, Defy, Smeg, Bosch European or other fridges without internal filter slots
- Samsung or LG where the internal housing is damaged or was removed
- Older fridges (pre-2010) where the internal cartridge is discontinued
- Borehole or private-well water feeding a fridge dispenser
- Extra pre-filtration stage before an existing internal cartridge
Internal is the right answer
- Modern Samsung RS or RF with functioning internal housing (use HAF-CIN or HAF-QIN)
- Modern LG French Door with ADQ housing (use LT700P or LT1000P)
- When you need NSF-53 certification for lead or cysts
- When you need NSF-401 certification for pharmaceutical residues
- When fridge panel indicator light tracking is worth more than the inline install

Frequently asked questions
Any fridge that has a water dispenser or ice maker but no internal filter housing. In SA homes that covers most Hisense side-by-sides, nearly all Defy double doors and French Doors, many Bosch European-spec fridges, most Smeg water-dispenser models, and Samsung or LG fridges where the internal housing has been removed or damaged. Also used as a pre-filter on older Samsung RS and LG GSL fridges for extra chlorine reduction.
Physically yes. DA29-10105J is Samsung's part number, WSF-100 is the generic market number, and EF-9603 is the Electrolux-spec variant. All three are the same external inline cartridge with quarter-inch push-fit ports on each end and an identical internal element. We stock the NSF-42 certified version from all three naming conventions interchangeably, so whichever arrives in your search result is the correct part.
The cartridge is rated at 6 000 litres or 6 months, whichever comes first. In a typical Joburg household running a fridge dispenser daily with municipal water, the six-month time limit trips before the volume limit. Inline cartridges do not have an indicator light on the fridge panel, so we mark the install date on the cartridge body and schedule a calendar reminder. Chlorine breakthrough in the dispensed water is the first sign a cartridge is overdue.
For basic taste and odour the NSF-42 inline is equivalent to an NSF-42 internal cartridge. For health-related contaminants like lead and cysts (NSF-53) or pharmaceuticals (NSF-401) the inline is a step down because the smaller housing volume limits the carbon bed. If your fridge accepts an internal NSF-42+53 cartridge, use that. If it does not, an inline NSF-42 is the correct plumber-installed option.
Technically yes. In practice the connection points sit behind the fridge where the copper or plastic water feed enters the floor, often behind the toe-kick or inside a cabinet base. You need to cut the feed line cleanly, deburr both ends, insert into the quarter-inch push-fit ports, test for leaks, and reseat the fridge. That is a 20-minute plumber visit with the right tools. DIY without a push-fit disconnect tool tends to result in slow drips that ruin the skirting board.
In our install book the top five brands using inline filters are Hisense (H670, H700, RS694, RQ-56 series), Defy (DFF450, DFF451, F620), Smeg water-dispenser SBS and FQ models, Bosch European-spec side-by-sides, and any older Samsung RS or LG GSL where the internal housing was removed or damaged. If your fridge brand is not on that list, WhatsApp us the model number and we confirm whether inline is the right choice.
On the copper or plastic water feed line that runs from the wall isolator to the solenoid valve at the back of the fridge. Most kitchens have the feed entering the floor or wall behind the fridge, so we install the cartridge in-line with brackets holding it to the back of the kitchen cabinet or fridge pedestal. It stays accessible for the six-month swap without having to pull the whole fridge out each time.
Yes. Supply plus install is the default for inline cartridges because the connection points are rarely accessible without moving the fridge. We cover Sandton, Bryanston, Fourways, Randburg, Northcliff, Morningside, Rosebank, Parkhurst, Hyde Park, Linden, Cresta, Robindale and the rest of the northern suburbs. Typical visit is 20 to 30 minutes including feed shut-off, cut-in, leak test and fridge reseat. We also courier the cartridge nationally for homeowners who have their own plumber.
