How the install works

The DA29-00020B is a homeowner-friendly cartridge. The twist mechanism seats cleanly, the seal is reliable, and the indicator reset is a two-button combination. A straight replacement takes about three minutes if you are doing it yourself, or a 20-minute visit if we are on site fitting it.

What makes the 20-minute version different from the DIY three-minute version is the flush protocol and the leak check. New cartridges shed carbon fines for the first two to three litres. Skipping the flush means the first pitcher of water from the fridge tastes like a pond. Our visit includes the flush, the reset and a pressure test on the connector behind the fridge.

  • Shut off. Water feed off at the fridge or at the mains branch.
  • Twist out. Quarter turn anti-clockwise, cartridge drops.
  • Twist in. New cartridge, quarter turn clockwise until flush.
  • Flush. Dispense three litres until water runs clear.
  • Reset. Ice Type + Child Lock held together on RS50/RS52.

The four-step install

Every DA29-00020B visit follows the same sequence. The flush and leak test are the two steps that inexperienced installs skip.

1

Confirm part

Model number in, DA29-00020B confirmed against the housing type.

2

Swap cartridge

Supply off, old twist out, new twist in, 90-degree seat check.

3

Flush three litres

Dispenser run until carbon fines clear and water tastes neutral.

4

Reset indicator

Panel combination held for three seconds, light cycles back to blue.

What you actually notice after the swap

The change from a tired DA29-00020B to a fresh one is visible on the third pour. The chlorine edge that builds up through Joburg municipal water is gone. Ice cubes taste like water instead of the inside of the fridge. Dispenser flow returns to the original spec, which on an RS68 is noticeably firmer than most households remember.

  • Chlorine taste. Gone on the first full flush, stays gone for the rated life.
  • Ice smell. Old ice takes on fridge odours when the cartridge is spent. Fresh cartridge ice is neutral.
  • Flow rate. A new cartridge recovers the 1.9 L/min rated flow at the dispenser.
  • Indicator behaviour. Reset light stays blue for the full six months if the reset was done correctly.

Genuine Samsung or certified compatible?

Both options carry the same NSF-42 and NSF-53 certification and the same 0.5 micron rating. The decision is warranty status and budget, not performance.

Genuine Samsung

HAF-CIN / HAF-CIN/EXP

  • Original Samsung part number and hologram verification
  • Default for fridges in first 24 months of manufacturer warranty
  • Matches ice maker and dispenser flow spec exactly
  • Supply chain traced from Samsung SA distributor to van
Certified compatible

EcoAqua / Waterdrop / Tier1

  • Matching NSF-42 and NSF-53 certification on packaging
  • 0.5 micron rating and 1 890 litre rated capacity
  • Tooled to identical housing spec, same twist seat
  • Sensible choice past the manufacturer warranty window

Frequently asked questions

The DA29-00020B is the single most-replaced Samsung cartridge in our workload. These are the questions we hear every week.

The DA29-00020B (also sold as HAF-CIN and HAF-CIN/EXP) fits Samsung side-by-side refrigerators from 2015 onwards, including the RS50N, RS50K, RS52N, RS52K, RS68N, RS68A and RS8000 series. It also fits select older French Door models in the RF28H, RF23H and RF263 ranges. Send the full model number and we confirm exact compatibility before the install.

Yes. HAF-CIN is the Samsung part name, DA29-00020B is the Samsung part number, and HAF-CIN/EXP is the current generation export version. All three refer to the same physical cartridge with the same housing, flow rate, NSF-42 and NSF-53 certification, and 0.5 micron rating. If your fridge takes any one of these, it takes all three.

Samsung rates the cartridge at 1 890 litres or 6 months, whichever comes first. In Joburg municipal water, most households hit the time limit before the volume limit. The indicator on the door counts down automatically and switches from blue to red when the cartridge is due. If water starts tasting off or dispenser flow slows before six months, replace earlier regardless of the indicator.

Yes. Genuine Samsung HAF-CIN / HAF-CIN/EXP cartridges are certified to NSF-42 (chlorine, taste and odour reduction) and NSF-53 (lead, cysts and select health contaminants). Reputable compatible cartridges carrying the DA29-00020B designation should also carry both certifications on the packaging. If the packaging only shows a generic NSF logo with no standard numbers, the cartridge is not actually certified.

On the RS side-by-side range the housing sits in the top right corner of the main fridge compartment, just under the ceiling. Twist the cartridge a quarter turn anti-clockwise and it drops out. The new cartridge twists back in the same way. On older RS models the housing is inside the base kickplate at the front of the fridge, which means pulling off the front grille. The model number confirms which layout applies.

On most RS50 and RS52 models, hold the Ice Type and Child Lock buttons together for three seconds. Older RS68 models use Power Cool and Power Freeze held together. The panel beeps and the red filter light switches back to blue. We reset the indicator on every install visit as part of the service.

For fridges outside the manufacturer warranty window, a certified compatible from a reputable brand (matching NSF-42 and NSF-53, matching 0.5 micron, matching flow rate) is a legitimate choice and is what we fit in most installs. For fridges still under warranty, we default to genuine Samsung to avoid any argument on a claim. Our quote lists both with their certifications so you choose.

Yes for a straight replacement. The cartridge is designed for homeowner replacement and takes about three minutes including the indicator reset. Turn the water feed off at the fridge, twist the old cartridge out, twist the new one in, flush for three minutes by pressing the dispenser until the water runs clear of carbon fines, reset the indicator. We supply the cartridge with a printed instruction sheet if you prefer DIY.
